How to Use Wax Melts: A Beginner's Guide

If you're new to wax melts, welcome — you're about to make your home smell incredible. Here's everything you need to know to get a rich, long-lasting scent from every melt.

What is a wax melt?

A wax melt is a flameless way to fragrance your home. Unlike a candle, there's no wick — you warm the wax in a burner, it melts and releases its scent, and when it cools it sets again, ready for next time. Our melts come as two formats: snap bars (break off a square at a time) and clam shells (six easy-snap segments). Both are hand-poured in the UK in small batches.

What you'll need

  • A wax melt burner — either a tea-light burner or an electric burner
  • A tea light (if using a traditional burner)
  • One or two segments of wax melt

How much to use

Start with one segment of a clam shell, or one square of a snap bar. That's plenty for most rooms. Want a stronger throw in a bigger space? Add a second piece. There's no need to fill the whole dish — a little goes a long way.

How to make the scent last

  • Warm the melt in short sessions (3–4 hours) rather than all day — the fragrance lasts longer
  • Keep doors closed to let the scent build
  • Use the right amount of heat — an overheated melt burns off its fragrance faster
  • When the scent fades, it's time to swap the wax (see below)

When to change the wax

Wax melts don't evaporate — only the fragrance does. When your melt stops smelling, let it cool and harden, then pop it out and add fresh wax. Tip: leave it to set, then a gentle press releases the old wax cleanly.

Staying safe

  • Never leave a burning tea light unattended
  • Keep burners out of reach of children and pets
  • Place your burner on a heat-resistant surface
  • Always follow the safety information on the product label (CLP)
