Changing your wax melts is quick and mess-free once you know how. When a melt stops giving off scent, the fragrance is spent — but the wax is still there, so it needs removing before you add a fresh piece. Here are the easiest ways to clean your burner and swap your scent.
When should you change the wax?
Wax melts don't shrink or disappear — only the fragrance fades. When your melt no longer smells even after warming, it's done. Always let the wax cool and harden completely before you remove it. Never pour hot, liquid wax down the sink — it will set and block your drain.
Method 1: The cotton wool method (quickest)
- Light your burner for a minute or two to just soften the surface of the wax (don't fully melt it)
- Blow out the tea light
- Lay a couple of cotton wool pads or a piece of kitchen roll over the wax
- The warm wax soaks into the pad — lift it out and bin it
- Give the dish a quick wipe and you're ready for a fresh melt
Method 2: The pop-out method (no heat)
- Wait until the wax is completely cold and solid
- Gently press one edge of the wax with your thumb, or twist the dish slightly
- The hardened disc should pop out in one clean piece
- Pop it in the bin — no wiping needed
Tip: if it won't budge, put the burner dish (if removable) in the freezer for 10–15 minutes. The wax contracts and lifts straight out.
Method 3: The slide method (warm)
- Warm the wax until it's just melted, then blow out the flame
- Carefully slide the liquid wax into a lined bin or an old container to set — never down the sink
- Wipe the warm dish clean with kitchen roll
Cleaning the dish
Once the old wax is out, wipe the dish with a dry piece of kitchen roll while it's still slightly warm. For a deeper clean, use a little warm soapy water, then dry thoroughly before your next melt. A clean dish keeps each new scent true, with no muddling of fragrances.
